Overview

Driving Questions:
How can the allegory of The Sneetches be applied in the world today?
Learning Goal:
To understand the allegory of The Sneetches and how it can be applied in MANY situations still today many years after the book was written. 
Success Criteria:
To publish a set of four responses showing understanding of the allegory of
The Sneetches

REVIEW - Sneetches Digging Deeper (Part 3)     Class Presentation   (Google Slides)  
​Students will review the Google Slide presentation outlining the importance of see The Sneetches as an allegory. As they review they will watch for what makes the allegory connection strongest.  After reviewing students will look six (6) learning activities and consider the various options. .

As a class we will review the YOU DO learning activities and the options:
Time will be spent in class to go over the assignment for each leaning activity, give examples of possible ideas and collect from students alternative ideas that correspond with the overall theme of the learning here.

Time will also be allocated to discuss ideas, give examples and make sure students have a strong understanding of the options available to make this a personal learning experience.

Activity overview) Learning Activities  Students rotate through a set of groups to review each of their options in the learning activities. Each group will be focused on a different learning activity.

Students will eventually choose four of the six activities to complete. Each will show their understanding of the possible allegory represented by
The Sneetches.  

Activity 1  Sneetches Critical Thinking Questions        Activity 1
Answer one or all of the following questions about the Sneetches society. 
These questions are aimed to promote critical thought and push students to think deeper about the message of the book.

Activity 2   Sneetch Sentences      Activity 2
Choose 7 of the 11 words.
Acceptance / Differences / Discrimination / Diversity / Equal Rights / Exclude / Exploit / Segregation / Stigma / Teasing / Torment / Your choice
Use each word in a sentence that connects to the world of the Sneetches. Each sentence should show your understanding of the Sneetch society. 

Activity 3 A Modified Venn Diagram    Activity 3
Students will complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the Sneetches society against those groups in our society that feel oppressed or dis-empowered.
Some suggested issues/ groups to use as comparison are: 
Black Lives Matter / Islamophobia / LGBTQ / Poverty / First Nations / Women / Mentally Challenged / Physically Challenged.
Students are encouraged to choose a group / issue they feel strongly about whether it is on this short list or not.

Activity 4 A Letter to The Sneetches      Activity 4
Pretend Sylvester McMonkey McBean never visited the Sneetches with his special machine. It is up to you to help solve the segregation and discrimination issues taking place on the beaches!
Write a letter to the Sneetches with your plan. Be sure to include specific steps they should take to achieve equal rights in their world.

Activity 5    If I Were A Sneetch      Activity 5
Pretend you are a Sneetch! How would you convince the other Sneetches that segregation and separation was not the way to go.
What would you do or say to get the other Sneetches to understand acceptance and inclusion.  
Write outline of how you would change things if you were a Sneetch. You might want to use examples of how others have overcome racism and segregation in this world.​

Develop your own Sneetch activity that shows you understand the Sneetch society and its deeper meaning.
This does not have to be written work but if it is remember the recommended word count.

WE SHARE

Publish 

Students will publish each of their four learning activities. They may use Google Docs, Google Slides or the platform of your choice. Send the digital copy, URL or link to your teacher.

Presenting

Students will present and share at least one of their learning activities with the other students. Each student will have the chance to explain why they chose the expressions they did and go over the details with at least one other person.
Presentation reminders will be reviewed in a document (PDF)
